NEPTUNE CITY, NJ - As thousands of Nemo-smitten kids drag their parents to the pet shop to find clownfishes of their own, dedicated hobbyists worry that the Nemo craze may be more harmful than beneficial for the fish...and disappointing for the kids, because of a lack of knowledge concerning proper care. "Experiencing the magic of an aquarium, fresh or marine, is the result of proper set-up and maintenance," explains David Boruchowitz, Editor-in-Chief of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine and the author of The Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums. "It doesn't have to be difficult, or even especially expensive, but it does need a basic working knowledge and reasonable attention. That means understanding the nature of the aquarium environment, too, which, of course, is part of the fun."
To help aspiring aquarists be successful in this hobby, TFH magazine, the world's oldest and most respected aquarium magazine, is publishing a special supplement to its upcoming December and January issues, which are scheduled for release starting in mid-October, around the same time as the release of "Finding Nemo" on DVD and video. This special supplement, called Dream Marine, will also be available in pet stores throughout the country for distribution, without charge, to consumers as a public service. It promises to guide newcomers through the necessary first steps for getting started with a Nemo tank. Included in the supplement is a step-by-step guide to a beginner marine aquarium set-up. The Marine Aquarium Council contributes a piece on the importance and current practice of reef conservation, and the clownfish-keeping information is by renowned expert Joyce Wilkerson.
Of special interest is TFH's exclusive interview with Nemo himself - the talented Alexander Gould, who was the voice of the young clownfish. Through his work on the movie, Gould developed what he expects to be a career-building interest in marine biology. "We're publishing Dream Marine because we have always supported responsible fish-keeping," says TFH's Publisher, Dominique De Vito, "and we think people who want to start a marine tank should have the best information available to them." The magazine's Co-Publisher, Nancy Rivadeneira, points out: "Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2002, TFH has been both a pioneer in the American pet industry and the leader in consumer pet education for three generations. Our educational tools, coupled with advances in aquarium technology, make proper aquarium care more affordable and simpler than ever."
According to Glen Axelrod, TFH's President/CEO, "TFH's foundation is the promotion of our critical end goal: Responsible Animal Care. Founded by my late father and my uncle, TFH has been the leader in responsible animal care for over 50 years. Our literature and products are designed to help educate and create an awareness of a pet's needs, and thereby promote a healthy relationship that can be enjoyed by both owner and his animal companion."
